You may have heard of the Master Cleanse in the media, or maybe the lemonade diet, they are both the same system though, a detoxification program which emerged in the 1930′s. It is as popular today as it was back then, but people try to use it as a diet no which is not what it was intended for. You might lose some weight by following it, but that would be a mixture of fat, muscle and water that you lose, and you don’t really want to lose muscle as it is hard to put back on, and losing water is just temporary so as soon as you come back off this system you will put that part of the weight back on.
The system is quite simple to follow, a quick overview is that for 10 days you don’t eat any food and you just drink a mixture of lemon juice, Grade B maple syrup and cayenne pepper (mixed together with water) although you need to read the book to find out how to do it properly. The creator of the cleanse chose those ingredients as he thinks they are the most effective ones to help remove debris and toxins from your colon. As you aren’t eating any fiber then you have to also take a laxative every day to make sure you don’t get bunged up.
With people complaining all the time about how restrictive a typical diet is then you would imagine that something this extreme and restrictive would be avoided like the plague, but in actual fact it is becoming more and more popular, spurred on in part by the fact some high profile celebrities have admitted using it. You can find a whole host of books now as well which try to give you little tweaks and tips that the authors claim will help make the whole process a lot easier to stick to, Master Cleanse Secrets is a good example of this.
You should never think of it as a way to lose weight though, stopping eating for any length of time is never a healthy way to lose weight and people are unfortunately not only following this system to lose weight, but also taking it to extremes and following it for much longer than the normal 10 days. Instead if you want to lose weight you should be aiming to find a sensible diet which gets you to eat healthier meals while cutting your calorie intake down below the amount your body needs each day so you lose weight.
If you hate the idea of a traditional diet though then you could instead go for one which replaces meals with a substitute, like Slim Fast which has you drink special milkshakes for breakfast and lunch and then you cook your own healthy evening meal afterwards. It is really easy to make the milkshakes so you won’t be bogged down making special meals all the time like with most diets, and as long as you keep your evening meal healthy then it is a simple way to lose weight.
If you are dead set on following the detox system we have discussed though, then one thing that is vital is that you check with your doctor before you start to see if they know of a reason why you shouldn’t do it. There are other options if you want to detox though, there are other systems you can follow at home, and kits you can buy, or you can pay to go on a residential retreat where a set of staff guide you through their own process and make sure you are ok throughout it all.
